Case: True cost of Fashion On 1 October, 2016 the Swedish clothes and fashion chain, H&M Hennes & Mauritz, will be opening the first store stores in New Zealand. The familiar red H&M sign will be viewed in the Sylvia Park shopping center in Auckland. A second H&M is expected to open in 2018 in in the Commercial Bay development on lower Queen St and would include its home and living range.
The multinational retailer is the second largest clothing retailer in the world and has more than 3500 stores in 57 countries, and is known for its affordable fashion offerings as well as collaborations with guest designers and celebrities.
Amid the publicity surrounding the opening, the Washington-based Workers Rights Consortium said hundreds of thousands of workers making H&M garments in factories in Bangladesh were doing so in dangerous conditions. “We’re talking about severe safety hazards. For example, lack of fire doors and fire exits, lack of proper alarm systems, lack of sprinkler systems,” said Workers Rights Consortium executive director Scott Nova. Clothing giant H&M is facing accusations of child labor and factory conditions that are unsafe for workers. H&M is the second largest clothing retailer in the world with 4100 stores operating globally and another 400 scheduled to open in 2016. H&M is the second largest clothing retailer in the world with 4100 stores operating globally and another 400 scheduled to open in 2016.
“There’s no question that workers’ lives continue to be put at risk at many H&M factories and certainly consumers in New Zealand should be aware of that,” he said. The problem is shared by many major clothing brands, and another charity organisation rated H&M’s efforts to avoid worker exploitation higher than some local brands such as Glassons, Ezibuy and Pumpkin

Patch. But H&M is the biggest buyer of clothing in Bangladesh, contracting more than 200 factories to make its clothes. It was the first company to sign up to the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety after the collapse of Rana Plaza killed 1129 workers in 2013. Despite not having clothes made at Rana Plaza it promised to make safety improvements to all its factories in that country. But three years on, and a year since the deadline for making improvements expired, most of the factories used by H&M were still unsafe, Mr Nova said.
He said the company had also not followed through on a promise ensuring all its factory workers were paid a living wage, but admitted H&M was not the only retailer slow to act. “H&M is not particularly worse than other major brands and retailers but it’s also not particularly better. “They tend to talk a better game on labour rights and human rights than some of their competitors but when it comes to actually delivering on that rhetoric we haven’t seen much evidence of genuine progress,” Mr Nova said.
Swedish investigative journalists Moa Krnstrand and Tobias Andersson kerblom spent weeks talking to factory workers in Myanmar who made clothes for H&M. They found girls as young as 14 working 12-hour days in two factories outside Rangoon, in breach of Myanmar law and international labour conventions. Their findings were published in a book this month called Modeslavar, or Fashion Slaves. (Source: RadioNZ)
