Report 1: Overall Industry Sector Scan
For these assignments, you will write concise (5-10 pp.), well researched, well-written report to me that address key issues in the industrial sector of your choice. Your goal, in short, is to know your industry better than anybody competing with you for the positions you are applying for after you graduate. In this report you will provide an overall environmental scan of the sector you have chosen, to give me an understanding of your focus and interests. Composition Guidelines: In a properly organized report (see p. 61 in Plain Language Style Guide and handout below for correct format), using proper sentence structure (that is, not point form): Explain the topic and some background (include why youve chosen this topic). Point out the main issues you that have affected this industry in the last twenty years, in Canada and throughout the world. Describe the sources of information you used. Explain the challenges a student or entrepreneur has when finding important information regarding this industry. Include visual elements: Headings, lists (where applicable), and graphics (where appropriate).
Report 2: Legal / Regulation / Governmental Constraints
Describe the Legal / Regulatory / Government constraints and issues within the industry that you have chosen.
Report 3: Mass Media
For your third report describe how your industry sector is depicted by mass media, in Canada and elsewhere. Mass media’s influence is enormous, or course, in determining public opinion and capital investment.
Report 4: Social / Digital Media
Describe how social / digital media “governance” is done within your industrial sector.
Report 5: The future of Business Communications
For the fifth report use both popular media and academic sources to present a potential future perspective of business communications.
