Situation: Students will read a nonfiction passage relating to creativity, using graphic organizers and comprehension questions students will determine the main idea and relevant details.
Learned Capability Verb: The students will be able to identify the main idea and determine which details are relevant.
The learned capabilities: This exercise will exercise the student’s intellectual skills, cognitive strategies and verbal information.
Object of Performance: Students will learn how determine the main idea and support the main idea with relevant details from the passage.
Action Verb: The students will read a nonfiction passage about creativity. The students will complete a graphic organizer about the topic, main idea and relevant details. Students will also answer multiple choice questions about the article’s topic, main idea, and relevant details.
Tools, Constraints, or Special: The tools that will be needed for this activity would be a laptop, paper, an access to the website Newsela, and the internet. Constraints this lesson will take approximately 90 minutes, with 9th and 10th grade students. Another constraint is that the class size should be between 20-25 students.
The activity that I will describe is creating a graphic organizer. Students will use paper and pencil to create a graphic organizer. This graphic organizer will have a space for the topic, main idea detail #1 and detail #2. As the student reads each section of the article and determine and record what the topic is, followed by what the author wants the reader to know about the topic which is the main idea, and two details to support the main idea that was determined
