The essay for this course is an argumentative essay. You can choose one of the three statements/questions below and argue persuasively for/against, relying on previous research to support your argument. Essay topics outlined below are based on course material, your previous assessments and examples of language you have sourced yourself (depending on the topic chosen, this can be the same language sample you used in the portfolio tasks or the group assessment). Topic one: In what ways do words in context (or out of context) influence how we understand one another? Topic two: In what ways do metaphors inform or influence how we make sense of things? Topic three: How do we make sense of ourselves and others through narratives? Your essay must be formatted in an acceptable academic way. In general terms, this will require margins of at least 2.5cm, double spacing, and a font-size of at least 12 point. Your essay should use a consistent, recognised referencing style, although the choice of referencing is left open- for example, you may use Harvard style, or alternatively the APA (American Psychological Association) style which is commonly used in applied linguistics.
