It might sound like a straightforward question on the surface, but we routinely struggle over how to best answer it. Often the struggle is because I have no idea where we see myself in one year let alone in five years. Or we have some hopes about where I’ll be but are acutely aware that even the best-laid career plans can change, and so I feel odd about giving an answer that implies certainty. All I have at this point is that we have long sought to identify indicators of mental health, and this profession is founded upon a well-developed understanding of holistic wellness. In the next decade, I expect we will develop a more sophisticated understanding of complex connections [between] mental health and a variety of factors such as neurobiology, spirituality, environment and culture. As we understand these influences, our approaches to counseling including research regarding evidence-based practice and engagement in interdisciplinary cooperation will need to evolve accordingly. The next decade will be exciting for the profession of counseling as we try to maintain the momentum of the past and face the unknown future. In my opinion, we have a variety of needs, challenges and opportunities. There is the two-pronged effort to secure professional unity (as counselors with areas of specialization continue to expand) and to meet the increasing pressure for portability of professional licensure between states. A new challenge is the increased use of technology, cyber counseling and virtual reality. An area of opportunity is the specialization and clinical training that will be provided at the doctoral level for practicing licensed counselors.
